The Crown Prince Rudolf apple is believed to the the oldest known Styrian apple variety. Styria is the state in southeastern Austria from which the Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary originally hailed. This variety was first introduced at the World Exhibition of 1873 in the Austria-Hungarian capital of Vienna, just sixteen years before Prince Rudolf’s death. This variety’s cream-colored flesh is said to be sweet and mildly spicy. Although it can be used for baking and cider making, it is best known for it’s high dessert quaility and excellent storage capabilities.
